Crack filling is the most important maintenance step most driveway owners either skip or do out of order. Done correctly and at the right time, it stops small damage from turning into expensive structural failure. Done wrong — or skipped in favor of going straight to sealcoating — it either does nothing or makes things worse.

Why cracks matter more than they look

A crack in your driveway isn't just a cosmetic problem. It's an entry point for water. In Rhode Island, water that gets into a crack goes through 30 to 50 freeze-thaw cycles in a typical winter. Each time it freezes, it expands by roughly 9 percent in volume — widening the crack mechanically from the inside. By spring, a crack that started as 1/4 inch wide can be significantly wider, and it may have reached the sub-base below the asphalt.

Once the sub-base is compromised, you're no longer dealing with a crack — you're dealing with potential pothole formation. The asphalt above a weakened sub-base has nothing solid to rest on, and under vehicle load it fails. That's a much more expensive repair than filling the crack before it gets there.

The right preparation: hand digging, not compressed air

Before any filler goes into a crack, the crack has to be properly cleaned and prepped. The method matters here more than it sounds.

The correct approach is to dig out loose material by hand — removing deteriorated asphalt, debris, and vegetation from inside the crack. This sounds simple but it's the step many contractors rush. The goal is clean crack walls that the filler can actually bond to. Filler applied over loose material, dirt, or vegetation won't bond properly, which means it will separate and allow water in again within a season.

Some contractors use compressed air to clean cracks. The problem is that compressed air moves debris around rather than removing it, and it doesn't address loose material embedded in the crack walls. Hand preparation takes longer and is harder to scale, which is why it gets skipped — but it's what produces a fill that holds.

Hot rubberized filler: why the material matters

Not all crack filler is the same. The correct material for pavement crack repair is hot rubberized sealant — a material that's heated and poured into the prepared crack, where it bonds to both walls as it cools.

The critical property of hot rubberized filler is flexibility. Asphalt expands and contracts with temperature — a parking lot on a Rhode Island summer day can reach surface temperatures above 120°F, then drop well below freezing the same week in November. A rigid filler cracks under that thermal movement and fails quickly. A rubberized filler flexes with the pavement, maintaining its seal through temperature cycles rather than fracturing after the first winter.

Cold-pour crack filler products (available at hardware stores) use a different formulation that doesn't bond as effectively and doesn't have the same flexibility. They're a stopgap for small surface cracks in low-traffic areas, not a substitute for proper hot rubberized repair on active cracks.

Which cracks can be filled — and which can't

Not every crack is treatable with filling, and being clear about this distinction is part of honest maintenance advice.

Active linear cracks — cracks you can see and feel, running in relatively straight or gently curved lines — are the ideal candidates for filling. These are typically 1/4 inch to 1 inch wide and represent damage to the surface layer of asphalt. Properly prepped and filled, they can be stabilized and sealed effectively.

Edge cracking — cracking along the perimeter of the driveway where there's no lateral support — can often be filled, though it may recur if the underlying lack of support isn't addressed.

Spider cracking (also called alligator cracking) is a different situation entirely, and the honest answer is that it cannot simply be filled. See the next section for why.

Spider cracking: what filling can and cannot do

Spider cracking — the web of interconnected cracks that fans across an area of pavement in a pattern resembling broken glass — is a sign that the problem has moved deeper than the surface. By the time asphalt shows spider cracking, the sub-base beneath it has been compromised. The cracking pattern reflects the asphalt bending under load without adequate support below.

Filling individual spider cracks directly with filler doesn't address the base failure underneath. The structural problem is still there; you've just put material over the visible symptoms. The area will continue to fail, and the filler won't hold because the asphalt is still moving under load with nothing solid supporting it.

What crack filling can do in the presence of spider cracking is contain it. Filling the cracks around the perimeter of a spider-cracked area — rather than directly within it — creates a barrier that slows the spread of damage into surrounding pavement that's still intact. This is a legitimate maintenance strategy when the spider-cracked area is bounded and the surrounding pavement is otherwise in decent condition.

But the spider-cracked area itself? The realistic options are patching or full resurfacing of that section — not sealcoating or crack filling. We cover this in more detail in the Understanding Spider Cracks article.

Crack filling must come before sealcoating — not after

This is the sequencing mistake we see most often, and it's worth being direct about.

If you seal before filling cracks, the sealer covers the crack opening at the surface — it bridges over it cosmetically. But the crack is still open below the surface. Any moisture already inside the crack is now sealed in. Every freeze-thaw cycle continues to expand and deepen the crack from below, except now you can't see it happening because the surface looks fine. By the time damage is visible again, it's significantly worse than it would have been if you'd just left the crack open.

The right sequence, always: identify cracks, prepare them, fill them, let the filler cure, then seal the surface. We won't apply sealer over unfilled active cracks — it undermines the entire purpose of the work.

When to act

The best time to fill cracks is when they're narrow — 1/4 inch or less — before water has had a chance to reach the sub-base. Cracks that are caught early are cheaper to fill, easier to prep, and hold longer. Waiting until cracks are wide and deep significantly increases both the cost and the complexity of repair.

If you're seeing surface cracking that wasn't there a season ago, it's worth having someone look at it before the next freeze season. What takes an hour to fill now could take considerably more to address in the spring.
